What is GRE?

GRE stands for Graduate Record Examination. Most of the reputed global universities accept GRE as an admission test for the graduate programs from Masters in Technology to Masters in Arts and even Masters in Business Administration. Graduate aspirants from all around the world who are interested in pursuing a master’s, MBA, specialized master’s in business or doctoral degree take the GRE General Test. The GRE General Test, created and administered by Educational Testing Service (ETS), measures verbal reasoning, quantitative reasoning and analytical writing skills. If you plan to pursue an MS, MEM (Masters in Engineering Management) or MFE (Masters in Financial Engineering), then GRE is a qualifying test that you will need to take.

The GRE is now shorter!

For those intending to take the GRE General Test in September 2023 or later, it is crucial to acquaint yourself with the forthcoming changes. By delving into the updated landscape of the GRE, you can enhance your preparation, ensuring a smoother and more informed journey toward your desired educational institution.

As part of an effort to improve the overall experience for test-takers, reduce test-related stress, and value candidates’ time, the Educational Testing Service (ETS) is introducing a condensed version of the GRE. Beginning in September 2023, the updated GRE General Test will now take less than two hours to finish, effectively halving the current test duration. This transformation positions the GRE as the briefest and most time-effective standardized test for graduate school admissions, setting a precedent for modernized educational assessments.

The updated overall testing time for the computer-delivered GRE® General Test is under 2 hours! There are only three sections now, as compared to six earlier. The unscored section and the short-break have been removed from the new format.

GRE is section Adaptive test. The Verbal Reasoning and Quantitative Reasoning measures are section-level adaptive. This means the computer selects the second section based on your performance on the first section. Within each section, all questions contribute equally to the final score.

With all the changes, what remains unchanged?

Despite the transition to a shorter format, several key elements of the GRE General Test will remain unchanged. The fundamental structure, comprising sections on Analytical Writing, Verbal Reasoning, and Quantitative Reasoning, will persist. The scoring process for all three measures, along with the score scales, remains consistent on the shorter test. The Official Score Report format, section-level adaptive nature, and available accommodations will also mirror those of the current GRE. Test fees will not be affected by the reduced duration, and the shorter GRE will maintain delivery options at both test centers and homes. Graduate and professional programs will continue to use GRE General Test scores as before, and the retake policy, allowing tests once every 21 days up to five times within a continuous rolling 12-month period, remains unchanged. Additionally, GRE scores will remain reportable for five years from the test date.

GRE Scoring scale

The GRE score is a number that represents your ability to reason and think mathematically.

  • The AWA section consists of only one essay, each graded on a scale of 0-6 in half point increments (0 being the worst)

  • The quantitative section is scored between 130 – 170 in 1 point increment, with 130 being the least score and 170 being the highest.

  • The verbal section is scored between 130 – 170 in 1 point increment, with 130 being the least score and 170 being the highest.

  • The entire test is scored between 260 – 340 in 1-point increments.
